Vikings raid Iona
The monastic community founded by St. Columba on the tiny island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland was attacked by the Vikings. The Vikings returned in 806 killing over sixty of the people living there.²

Jan 28 - Charlemagne dies
Charlemagne lived into his early seventies but after an illness he died and was buried in the basilica that he had built in Aachen. Charlemagne was succeeded by Louis the Pious who was the only surviving legitimate son.³
