Nunney Castle's construction in Somerset began in around 1373 by Sir John de la Mare. The original castle consisted of a rectangular bailey and a tower-house at the centre surrounded by a moat. The tower-house is still standing and is made from a rectangular block with four round towers at the corners. The tower is narrow so that on the sides the corner towers almost touch. Four floors in the tower-house had one central room each and four circular rooms leading off within the towers.
