The foundation of Cwmhir in the secluded mountains of mid Wales is confused and has been documented to be either 1143 or 1176. Cistercian monks from Whitland Abbey built the church with the backing of Cadwallon ap Madoc, the chief lord of the Cantred Malienydd. In 1179 Roger Mortimer (d.1214) was instrumental in the death of Cadwallon and later became the ruler of Maelienydd.
