afydd was a Welsh prince and was the brother of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the Prince of Wales. Dafydd was born into the ruling House of Aberffraw, the dynasty that governed Gwynedd. He often found himself in conflict with his elder brother Llywelyn, as they vied for control over their family's territories. Despite their shared lineage, Dafydd frequently shifted allegiances, at times siding with the English Crown against Llywelyn. In 1255, he joined his brother Owain in a failed rebellion against Llywelyn, who then imprisoned him. However, he was later released and reconciled with Llywelyn. By 1274, he had defected to King Edward I of England, receiving lands in England and Marcher territories in return for his loyalty. In 1282 Dafydd turned against Edward and launched a surprise attack on the English stronghold of Hawarden, sparking a Welsh rebellion. Llywelyn soon joined the revolt, but he was killed later that year in battle. After Llywelyn's death, Dafydd became the de facto leader of Welsh resistance. Dafydd continued the fight against England but was eventually captured by Edward's forces in June 1283 near Bera Mountain in Snowdonia. He was taken to Shrewsbury, where he was executed.
