After a series of sea battles between English and French saillors, the French King, Philippe IV proposed a truce which included the marriage of his half-sister Blanche to Edward I and the retaking of Gascony from the English. Edward agreed to this but when the time came Philippe changed the agreement and offerred Blanche's younger sister, Margaret instead. This deception on the part of the French King led to renewed war between the two countries. Eventually Edward agreed to marry Margaret and peace with France. In 1299 Margaret married King Edward I of England. They had two sons and a daughter. Thomas as born on June 1, 1300 in Brotherton in Yorkshire, and was given the title of Earl of Yorkshire on December 16, 1312. Edmund was born as Woodstock on August 5, 1301, and was given the title Earl of Kent by Edward II. Eleanor, was born May 6, 1306 but died in childhood.Biography

As part of peace negotiations between England and France it was proposed that Edward I would marry Blanche of France, the half-sister of Philippe IV, and Philippe would take back Gascony. This was agreed but the French King changed the agreement by replacing Blanche with her younger sister Margaret. This action saw the peace negotiations fail and England and France were again at war with each other.
