Isabella was the daughter of King Charles VI of France and Isabeau of Bavaria. When Isabella was less than nine years old a marriage was arranged for her in 1396 to King Richard II of England who was almost thirty years old. Richard's first wife Anne of Bohemia died in 1394 and Richard may not have been prepared to engage in a proper marriage so short after after Anne's death. The marriage to Isabella was arranged as apart of a peace treaty between England and France. King Richard travelled to France to negotiate the treaty with Charles and when the talks were completed Richard and Isabella were married in Calais. After Richard's death in 1400 Henry IV wanted the young Isabella to marry his son (the future Henry V), but she refused and remained in mourning for her husband. After a couple of years it was agreed that Isabella should return to France. Isabella then married her cousin Charles, the Duke of Orleans but died only a few years into the marriage during childbirth.
