Edmund Beaufort was the son of Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset who was killed at the Battle of St. Albans in 1455. Edmund, like his father, was a Lancastrian supporter and was exiled when the Yorkist Edward IV took control of the country in 1461. Edmund proclaimed himself the Duke of Somerset when his elder brother Henry was executed after the battle of Hexham in 1464 but was never formally granted the title. Returning to England in 1471 to assist Margaret, King Henry VI's queen, Edmund found Lancastrian supporters to help but was defeated at the Battle of Tewkesbury in May of 1471. He was executed several days later and was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey.
