The Battle of Hastings - Later Stages
The Normans attack again
everal times the Normans attacked the English shield wall, each time weakening it. It is possible that by attacking and then retreating the Normans managed to get some of the English to follow then down the hill and to become exposed and killed. Finally after several attacks and retreats the English shield wall was damaged enough for mounted knights to break through. Their target was King Harold. How Harold was killed is not known but the Bayeaux Tapestry shows someone thought to be the King with an arrow in his eye. It is possible that Harold was injured by an arrow but it is more likely he was killed by a Norman Knight.
