ethelflaed was the daughter of Alfred the Great and sister of Edward the Elder of Wessex. She married Aethelred of Mercia, ruling jointly with her husband and raising Athelstan the future King of the English. Aethelflaed also assisted her brother Edward the Elder in battle against the Danes and Danelaw. After the death of her husband in 911, Aethelflaed was known as 'Lady of the Mercians' and ruled over Mercia in her own right until her death in 918. After her death Edward the Elder was able to extend his rule of Mercia as well as Wessex.
