Macbeth visits Rome
Macbeth took time to travel to Rome on a pilgrimage. Reports of his visit tell of him distributing large amounts of money.

Malcolm raids Northern England
Malcolm, the Scottish king attacked towns in the north of England.

Dunfermline Abbey founded
The Abbey of Dunfermline was founded by Malcolm III, King of the Scots and his wife Margaret. It was a daughter-house of Christ-Church, Canterbury from which Archbishop Lanfranc sent several monks.

Turgot appointed bishop of St. Andrews
Turgot, a monk from Durham, was chosen as bishop for St. Andrews Cathedral. He was consecrated after some difficulty as the Archbishop of Canterbury had objections, but the Archbishop of York stepped in and performed the ceremony. Turgot was never happy with his position as bishop and had thoughts of going to Rome to get confirmation of his disputed consecration, but he died in 1115 before doing so.

Foundation of Inchcolm Abbey
Alexander I founded this abbey on an island in the middle of the Forth river in Scotland. The Scottish king took refuge on the island in a storm and rewarded the hermit who looked after him with the foundation of a church.

Construction of new church at Dunfermline Abbey
The construction of new church buildings was begun in 1128 at Dunfermline Abbey. The outline of this earlier church can be seen on the floor of the current nave.

Holyrood House founded
The monastery of Holyrood was founded by King David I of Scotland. Tradition has it that the king was hunting in one of the royal forests around the city of Edinburgh when he came across an enraged stag which would have killed him and his horse. The king was some distance in front of his attendants who were unable to help. The king was saved when a cross of brilliant light appeared bewteen himself and animal which turned and fled. Later that night David vowed to build an abbey on the site of the event in thanks for his escape.

Coupar Angus Abbey founded
This Scottish Cistercian abbey was founded by Malcolm IV, King of Scotland. The monks that colonised it came from the abbey at Melrose.

Scottish churches subject to Rome
The churches of Scotland had been under the control of York. In this year Pope Celestine III transferred the jurisdiction of Scottish churches directly to Rome.

Balmerino Abbey founded
The Scottish Cistercian abbey is situated on the shores of the Firth of Tay. It was founded by the widow of William the Lion of Scotland and her son Alexander. It was built quickly and the monks from Melrose arrived before the end of 1229. The cloister is built on the north side of the church.

Jun 19
Body of Queen Margaret moved
After several years and many petitions to Rome, the body of Queen Margaret, the wife of Malcolm Canmore, was moved from its position in Dunfermline Abbey to a more prominent position nearer the altar. The Queen was canonised as a saint.

Margaret, the wife of Alexander III, died in this year.

Aug
Holyrood Abbey sacked
Before Edward's army returned to England they attacked Holyrood Abbey, destroying the shrines and taking the gold and silver vessels that were used in the ceremonies.

Jul
Capture of the castle at St. Andrews
After a lengthy siege failed to take the well defended castle at St. Andrews, Mary of Guise asked the French for help. The castle at St. Andrews was captured and the Protestant leaders and John Knox were taken into custody.

The Lords of the Congregation
A group of Scottish Lords signed a covenant promising to support the advancement 'the most blessed Word of God' and to push forward the Reformation in Scotland. This was a move against what they saw as the threat from France which came from the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots to the French Dauphin. They called themselves the Lords of the Congregation.

Jul
Prayer Book at St. Giles causes a riot
Charles introduced a new English Prayer Book and demanded that it should be used in Scottish Churches. At St. Giles in Edinburgh a riot erupted when the book was first read from. the riots spread throughout Edinburgh itself.

1638

Feb
The Scots sign the National Covenant
Thousands of Scots sign the National Covenant, which opposed the attempts by King Charles I to enforce changes on the Scottish Church and to protect the Presbyterian system. This would lead to a series of conflicts between Scotand and the English King known as the Bishops' Wars.

1639

Jun 18
Treaty of Berwick
The army Charles had put together was no match for the Scottish army under the command of Leslie and so the King signed the Treaty of Berwick. While the Scots returned home happy that they could deal with their own church affairs, Charles had no intensions of abiding by the terms of the treaty and used the treaty as a means of gaining time to plan his next move. This ended the first Bishops' War.

A Medieval Mystery

There appear to be some strange connections between the fourteenth century Old Wardour Castle and ancient stone circle Stonehenge.

1: Location

Old Wardour Castle appears to be aligned to ancient sites in the Stonehenge landscape.

2: Alignment

Stonehenge is aligned to the Summer Solstice. Old Wardour has a very similar alignment.

3: Size

Could the builders of Old Wardour used mesaurements from Stonehenge to layout the geometrical keep?
