aldwin of Bourg was the ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1118 until his death in 1131 as Baldwin II. He succeeded his cousin Baldwin of Boulogne who ruled Jerusalem as Baldwin I and whom he had fourght alonside during the First Crusade. When Baldwin of Boulogne was elected King of Jerusalam Baldwin of Bourg was given the title Count of Edessa. In 1104 Count Baldwin was captured during a battle with the Seljuk Turks and held prisoner for four years. On his release he found that Tancred, a fellow Crusader, had taken control of Edessa in his absence. Baldwin regained control of Edessa and then when King Baldwin I died in 1118, Count Baldwin was elected as his successor. It was during the reign of Baldwin II that the famous orders of warrior monks were founded, including the Knights Templar and Hospitaller. In 1131 Baldwin died and was succeeded by Fulk of Anjou who had married his daughter Melisende.
