The Jews had risen to great power in Granada. Unhappy with this, the Muslims stormed the palace and massacred the vizier and possibly 4,000 of his followers.

As the army of crusaders moved east they entered many Jewish communities. Many of the Westerners were unable to distinguish the Jews from Muslims and tensions arose. At first the Jews were able to move the army on with bribes but finally violence erupted. First at Speyer, and then in the city of Mainz the crusaders massacred indiscriminately. At Mainz the attackers were led by Count Emich of Leiningen, a German.

The Crusaders capture Jerusalem. When they ended the siege and entered the city they murdered non-Christians including Muslims and Jews and forced many to leave.

Even though the Jews were under special protection from King Richard I, because of their wealth that could help pay for the Crusades, the mob attacked 150 Jews hiding in the castle at York. Most committed suicide rather than be attacked by the mob, but the rest believing promises that they would be spared if they came out left the castle and were promptly massacred. The castle, made only of wood at this time was destroyed by fire during the disturbances.

King John ordered that Jews across the country had to pay a 'tullage', a sum of money to the king. Those who did not pay were arrested, imprisoned and forced to pay the money in return for their release. May Jews were executed or left the country.

The gates to London were opened by a supporter of the rebellious Barons and the houses of Jews were targeted for ransacking and burning. The rebels called for those Barons still on the side of John to join them. The Tower of London held by John's supporters was too well defended to fall into the hands of the rebels.

Jews in England were arrested and expelled.

King Edward I ordered the Jews to stop lending money and charging high rates of interest (usury). Instead, Edward suggested that the Jews should become farmers or learn crafts to earn a living. The Church controlled many of the trade guilds so it was impossible for the Jews to join and it was not possible for them to suddenly learn how to farm land. This led to hardship for many and some resorted to coin clipping. This meant shaving small amounts of metal from coins and melting the shavings down to sell for profit.

King Edward I raised the penalty for coin clipping from banishment to execution. Many Jews were arrested in London for coin clipping and almost 300 of them were executed for the crime. The practice entailed cutting slivers of metal off coins and forging new coins from the small pieces.

The Edict of Expulsion was a royal decree issued by King King Edward I forcing all the Jews in England to leave the country. Edward wanted to raise taxes so that he could pay for his Crusade but raising taxes was not popular. To get the approval for his tax from the nobles and knights he promised them that he would get rid of the Jews from England. The Jews were ordered to be gone by the end of October or face death.

To regain money spent on expanding his domains, Philippe turns his attentions to Italian bankers and Jews within the country from whom he can confiscate goods.

Ferdinand of Spain demanded that al the Jews in Spain either convert to Christianity or leave the county. This created a huge exodus of people from Spain taking their wealth and skills with them.
