2 of 5: After entering the castle along the causeway controlled by two gatehouses you
enter the outer bailey. This area would have been used to house
troops and horses. Timber buildings would have been constructed around
the edge. There are several towers built at the corners of the outer wall.
A drawbrigde and another gatehouse protect the inner bailey.

3 of 5:The inner bailey is a castle within a castle. Another set of walls and
gatehouse provide protection from attack. The inner bailey
consists of the keep, the strongest part of a castle, a chapel
where the King or Lord could worship and buildings for servants
and visiting nobles. A inner bailey would have been surrounded by
a ditch for added protection. A well would also have been dug somewhere
in the inner bailey so that a source of fresh water was always
available.

4 of 5:The keep was the last line of defence in times of war. The building is
rectangular with four corner towers. Inside would have been two floors, the upper floor
containing a large hall where banquet s would have been held. A forebuilding, shown on the
left, added an extra level of defense and shielded the main entrance. The windows would
have originally been small but have been enlarged over the years.
