2 of 5: London Bridge had a gate house at each end. This reconstruction shows one
of the towers, its drawbridge in the up position and the gap in the
bridge that the drawbridge crossed when it was down. A strong gatehouse
was required to prevent attackers from crossing the bridge and entering
the heart of the city.

3 of 5: Shops and houses lined each side of the bridge leaving just enough room
for travellers and carts to move along the centre. Living on the bridge
would have been better than living in the city as any waste would have
been dropped straight into the river rather than being dumped in the
streets as in the rest of the city.
