lint Castle was built during King Edward I's war against Llywelyn and was one of a series of castles constructed in the north of Wales by the English. Construction of the castle at Flint began in 1277 and was done quickly. Another of the castles built at the same time was Rhuddlan Castle a few miles to the west. The design of the castle is unusual as its main keep is not inside the main enclosure as is more common, but is positioned like a corner tower at the south-east angle of the castle. The keep is very large and circular and has its own ditch and is accessible via a drawbridge. At its base, the walls are over twenty feet think. As well as constructing a castle, King Edward had a village surrounded by a wall built as well. This village would have been populated with people from England in the hope of stabilising the peace of the surrounding area. In 1399 the castle was the venue for a meeting between King Richard II and the future king Henry Bolingbroke. Richard had returned from Ireland and was in northern Wales in hiding due to the dissatisfaction of the English. He was captured and at Flint Castle agreed to submit the English throne to Bolingbroke.
