he motte is all that remains now of Fotheringay Castle located to the south east of the small village, The castle was built at the end of the eleventh or at the start of the twelfth centuries by Simon de St. Liz, the second Earl of Northampton. It is probably most famous for being the birthplace of Richard III in 1452.
Richard, the future King of England, was born in Fotheringay Castle in Northamptonshire. His father was Richard Duke of York and his mother was Cecily Neville. Richard was their fourth son.
