anulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester, founded a Savigniac monastery in 1134 with monks provided by Furness Abbey, but due to its proximity to Scotland it was attacked in 1138 and the monks were driven out. A second attempt to colonise a religious community at Calder began in 1142 which was more successful. In 1147/1148 the Savigniac order was merged into the Cistercian order after experiencing financial and administrative difficulties. The remains of the abbey form part of a private residence and there is no public access.
