Treaty of Verdun 
At the Treaty of Verdun the sons of Louis the Pious settled their differences and divided the empire up between themselves. Louis the German took control of the eastern area, now the area of Germany. Charles the Bald took the western area, now the area of France. Lothair received the area between the two as well as Italy and title of Emperor.

Vikings in Ireland 
The Vikings captured Forannán, the Abbot of Armagh. Attempts to drive the Vikings out failed and the Vikings won a key battle at the fortress on the Rock of Dunamase.⁴

Mael Sechnaill became the high king of Ireland. Died in 862.⁴

Alfred 'the Great' is born
